“It also will be to participate in the conference like delegations of the SEAMEO associate members, countries supporting SEAMEO programs and activities, donor organizations and agencies, and representatives of the education sector in Southeast Asia and other parts of the world,” the reports noted.
The SEAMEC is the highest policymaking body of SEAMEO, an intergovernmental treaty organization founded in 1965 to foster cooperation among Southeast Asian nations in the fields of education, science, and culture. The council is composed of the education ministers and secretaries of the SEAMEO countries.
Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Jesli A. Lapus represents the Philippines in the Council, currently headed by Thailand’s Education Minister Jurin Laksanawisit.
The 45th SEAMEO conference and 5th ASED meeting are organized by the Philippine government through DepEd, in collaboration with the Thailand-based SEAMEO Secretariat (SEAMES) and Philippine government agencies such as the Departments of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Transportation and Communication (DoTC), Tourism (DoT), and Interior and Local Governement (DILG), Bureau of Customs, and Philippine National Police. The Cebu provincial government and Lapu-Lapu City government are also involved in organizing the event.
Earlier, Secretary Lapus stressed that the decision to hold both events in the country is a clear vote of confidence on the reforms and innovations introduced by the Philippine Government, through the Department of Education. “Their forthcoming visit to the country shows that we have best practices to share with the international community. Our neighbors in the region have taken notice of the strides we have made in improving access to and quality of basic education in at least, the last three years.” He said in reports.
The Philippines, which works closely with SEAMEO and its 15 regional centers across the region, has been an active SEAMEO member since the latter’s founding in 1965. It is host to three of the organization’s most respected regional centers, the SEAMEO INNOTECH (Regional Center for Educational Innovation and Technology) in Diliman, Quezon City, SEAMEO SEARCA (Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Los BaƱos, Laguna and SEAMEO TROPMED (Tropical Medicine) in the University of the Philippines, Manila campus.
