German, Cambodia to ink over EURO 19 Million for development aid.

H.E Dirk Niebel German Minister for economic cooperation and development and H.E Keat Chhon, minister of economy and finance will sign the grant agreement to Cambodia ,”the statement for the German embassy said on Wednesday.

. “Today the germane federal minister for economic cooperation and development, Dirk Niebel arrived in Phnom Penh for his first visit to Asia . The two legged trip included a visit to neighboring Vietnam . During his three days to Cambodia . Minister Niebel will discuss the political and social economic development with senior government officials,” the statement said. adding that In his first meeting with deputy prime minister and minister for economic and finance H. E Keat Chhon, minister Niebel underlines that German remains a reliable partner for Cambodia and will continue to support efforts to achieve the millennium development goals (MDGS).
“German development cooperation will be geared at alleviating the consequences of the global economic crisis which are particularly affecting the poor segments of the population,” it added.

Minister Niebel, together with German Ambassador Frank M. Mann and deputy prime minister and minister for economic and finance Keat Chhon also signed the agreement on financial cooperation 2009.”A grant of Euro 19 million will be made available for financial assistance and will be used for projects concerning the health sectors, regional economic development and rural infrastructures, It noted. “At the signing ceremony, minister Niebel stresses the importance of the German assistances in both sectors for reaching the MDGs. on the fundamental principles of German development cooperation. he pointed out that good governance, respect of human rights and rule of law and rights of opposition parties are essential for the cooperation between Cambodia and Germany ,”it said, adding that These are basic requirements for the sustainable development and an effective development cooperation. Therefore, Germany shall continue to cooperate with our Cambodian partners to improve the governance track record,”, in this context minister Niebel also highlighted that continued commitment to implement reforms in the land sector are essential for the sustainable development of Cambodia .

“The agreement on financial cooperation contains an additional allocation 1.6 allocation Euro 6 million for health sector and the aim of the social health protection program phase is to further improve the quality and accessibility of public and private heath services for the poor population in five provinces. The long term goals are the establishment of a social heath insurance scheme, including fee exemptions, health equity funding, community health insurance and social health insurance,’ it added. During his stay in Cambodia , Minister Niebel will meet with H.E Samdech Heng Samrin, president of the national assembly and representative s of the parliament, ministers of cooperating ministries, and representatives of the civil society of the donor community. Before leaving Cambodia Minister Niebel will proceed to Siem Reap for field visits of German cooperation project and for a visit of German activities in the field of the preservation of the Cambodian national heritage. ###
