Gem and Jewelry Fair 2010 in Cambodia

Ten of Million US dollars of jewelry showed in Cambodian gems and jewelry fair 2010

Ten of millions US dollars of jewelry from all kinds of gems and diamonds from the hosting country and regional countries on June 3, were showed and were worn by the local model fashion at Naga world casino in the downtown of Phnom Penh during the Cambodian gems and jewelry fair 2010.

Lok Chumteav Tep Bopha Prasidh, spouse of H.E Cham Prasidh, senior minister and minister of commerce said in the inaugural ceremony of the second Cambodia Gems and jewelry fair 2010 that this year event is bigger than last year. “It becomes international level now after it attracted for many countries joining this fair,” she said. The event also was taken part by hundreds of participants including foreign diplomats, senior embassy officials, international guests, seller, buyers and visitors, and exhibitors.

She stated that the gems and jewelry fairs constitutes a topic to which the ministry of commerce paid much attention and has been trying to turn it into an annual international event in Phnom Penh.
“This year’s gem and jewelry fair is the second event after the first Cambodia gems and jewelry fair, also being organized and held by ministry of comer in 2009, which has attained truly great success,” she emphasized. He highlighted that this initiative is to create a trade strategy to promote the production of jewelry to meet the domestic demands, as well for export to the regional ad the world markets takes place at a time when Cambodia has been developing in all fields, under the wise leadership of Samdech Techo Prime Minister Hun Sen.
“The efforts made to organize this event fully confirmed to the second phased rectangular policy of our royal government of Cambodia in developing economy and expanding various types of production and export markets,” she noted.

“This fair will help promote the production of jewelry in Cambodia and will attract both domestic and foreign investors to come to transform gold, diamonds and precious stones into jewelry for export,” she said, adding that I dare say this because our Cambodia, which is one of the present 49 least developed countries (LDC) in world, has enjoyed trade preferences from the rich countries that allow goods produced in our country to be exported to their markets completely exempted from customs duty, such as the markets of European community, Canada, the united states, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea. While our neighboring countries, that are developing countries do not enjoy such preferences.

She continued that some countries used to enjoy trade preferences too much from the United States in the past years but due to their economic progress, the united states has decided to remove those trade preferences and thus making their jewelry markets begin losing competiveness. “As for Cambodia produced jewelry, if we try to upgrade its quality to catch up with the popular designs in the international markets, our jewelry will enjoy fair competitiveness, which in the end brings us better profit,” she concluded.

She added that the second Cambodia gem and jewelry fair this year is bigger than last year and moreover, it is at international level as we have noticed the keen participation of foreign visitors and exhibitions from Hong Kong, Israel, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, China as well as the active participation of the local traders.

“The gems and jewelry fair this year comprises 54 booths and it is attended by 49 companies that will display their gems and jewelry worth tens of millions of US dollars,” she noted.

She also urged all the local gems and jewelry traders to make use of this period of four days to further understand and obtain experiences from those foreign exhibitors as well as to understand their clients’ needs.

She sincerely praised the exhibition organizing committee and the officials of the ministry of commerce for trying to organize this trade event and also thank all the Cambodian institution and ministries involved for helping facilities this event particularly the general department of customs and excise for the ministry of economy and finance. Meanwhile, my sincere thanks also goes to the Thai jewelry association, world trade exhibition company in Hong Kong, the Intertek company and all the take traders for their contributions and support to make this gems and jewelry fair take place.

Iris Kan, Golden Master jewelry Ltd. said that this event is attractive for us and a chance for my company show the final product from diamond and we also want to seek partners to make trade of gems especially Hong Kong and Cambodia.“ We rented a booth here to sell our product and it is real diamond and gem not fake one,” he said.

Madame Ly Channy, A local Cambodian visitor who enjoyed seeing the model show with the beautiful girl movie stars wearing necklaces, earnings and rings made from the diamond, precious gemstone and jewelry said that this event is real interested for me. “I did not join last year but this time is great with show fashion styles with nice dress and earnings, bracelet, rings and necklaces with diamonds,” she added. I also plan to buy diamond- made earrings,” she said.
