Phnom Penh to expand after development and population growth


Phnom Penh authorities will launch the master plan of Phnom Penh development projects in this year in the purpose to expand the development in city and to turn the city into beautiful city construction to serve the benefit of the people and to enhance economic growth, social development and population growth,” officials said this week.

Kep Chutema, Phnom Penh Governor in a meeting in city hall instructed three district governors including Russey Keo, Sen Sok, and Dorng Kor and City urbanization experts and cadastral officials to prepare details and comprehensive projects in their districts and they determined the reserved land as well as the impact in their districts before the master plan of Phnom Penh municipality which would be officially launch in 2010.

“Phnom Penh authorities now plan to expand road number 130 near central market region and review the report of planning the construction of water dam in Kop Srov area and continue to expand in digging dam at northern areas of Phnom Penh,” he said.

The street number 130 near central market area will be ended construction this year because that road is very important to deal the traffic jam at that place, he said, adding that anyway it also will help to renovate the beauty of Phnom Penh”.

“So far our local people living in two khans (districts) at northern parts of Phnom Penh increased to nearly 200,000 people and if we do not consider about the future plan in advance from now on. In the future we will face difficulties in solving the challenging matters,” Phnom Penh Governor told the meeting at city hall.

“We also have plan to build a large road into Phnom Penh with 40 m width linking from Reussey Keo to Sen Sok, and forward to Dorng Kor to Kandal province in northern parts of Phnom Penh,” he said, adding that it is possible to build that road when land of 27 communes of Kandal provinces cutting into Phnom Penh city in the near future.

“Currently, we have one a large road Russian Federation Boulevard (road linking from Phnom Penh International Airport to Phnom Penh downtown) - the main gate into Phnom Penh city-which build in the past years,” he noted.

“We hope it will have a new main road line soon and it could happen after we ask to Samdech Techo Prime Minister Hun Sen to approve for that road development projects. And moreover we also will get a number of new bridges for Phnom Penh city from the development projects,” he stresses. He also asked to Phnom Penh office of water resources and meteorology to dig 1000 m major canal construction at the northern part of Phnom Penh to prevent the water flood and facilitate the water from Phnom Penh.
The report from the government also said that the part of national road 5 from Phnom Penh to Prek Kdam will expand its size to four lane road doubling from today road and a part of national road six from Phnom Penh to Ba Teay district to Kompong Cham province also expand its side to four lane road doubling from today road. The government also will build a new bridge near current Chroy Changvar Bridge to facilitate the traffic jam and transportation. for a part of national road one in Mean Chey district of Phnom Penh also will expand its size to double times and a part of national road three also will enlarge its size to two times if comparing with today current and all these road expansion is to facilitate the traveling for local people to avoid the traffic jam and transportation after Phnom Penh grew in the last decade in population growth and construction development. Men Mon, chief of cabinet of Dorng Kor district hall said that in my district we have plan to develop the remaining roads into modern streets for local people and they have to join in hands to contribute construction of our community. We also protect the safety for our people and eliminate the inactive matters that we have faced after the population growth,” he said. Accruing to the 1998 Census put Phnom Penh's population at 862000 and as of 2008, according to census results; Phnom Penh had a population of 1,325,681.

“Phnom Penh currently is on the angel of development, good security and beauty,” Phnom Penh Governor Ke Chuptema said. We also are building the gardens along the river front to decorate the Phnom Penh city into famous city as other knew in region,” he said. Phnom Penh also celebrated its 575th anniversary in December 31 successfully and it also remained local people about achievement so far such as attract tourists and investors here.
