Cambodia supports East Timor for ASEAN Membership

Cambodia will support East Timor as a new member of the ASEAN countries and urged East Timor to seek support from other members of ASEAN for gaining as full member, officials said 21 April.

The announcement of Cambodia’s support for East Timor as new membership of ASEAN after East Timorese President Jose Ramos Horta met with Cambodian Samdech Techo Hun Sen at the Cambodian National Assembly.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen told East Timorese side that Cambodia will fully back East Timor as new membership of ASEAN after H.E Jose Ramo Horta required for the support, Eang Sophallet, assistant to Samdech Techo Hun Sen told reporters after the talk.

Samdech Techo also requested to East Timorese side to find the support from other members and East Timor will be real member for the short future,” Eang Sophallet added.

At the same time, Cambodia and East Timor also will strengthen and expand the bilateral cooperation between the two countries on the trade, economy as quick as possible.

Cambodia will send the trade delegation to East Timor to seek potential situation of expanding the export for trade and economic sector to East Timor, Eang said, adding that Cambodia will have rice products to export to market in East Timor. East Timor usually has imported the products from Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia and other countries. East Timorese President also invited Samdech Techo to visit East Timor with suitable times in future, Eang added.

In 2012, Cambodia will be the rotating chairman of ASEAN and Cambodia will play a key role for East Timor’s application for ASEAN membership.

Additionally, Dr Kao Kim Hourn, secretary of state for ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation told reporters after the meeting between H.E Jose Ramos Horta and H. E. Hor Nam Hong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign affairs and International cooperation focused on the climate change. Both sides discussed about Asian strategy in the upcoming top meeting on climate change in Mexico, Dr Kao said.

In a separate case, East Timorese President Jose Ramos Harto and 1996 Nobel Peace winner on April 21 met with Cambodian students at the University of Cambodia in Phnom Penh to deliver his key note speech about the peace cultural building said that his country will join ASEAN in 2012.
“But from now to 2012, we need to have full political stability, and economic growth in country to be potential membership of ASEAN,” he told the ceremony. In 2008, Jose Ramos-Horta was shot by rebel soldiers and later airlifted to Australia for treatment. East Timor gained independence from Indonesia in 2002 and the first president of East Timor Xanana Gusmao, and now he is Prime Minister of East Timor. East Timor, also known as Timor-Leste, named officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, is a country in Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island, within Indonesian West Timor. The land area of country of 15,410 km² and it owes rich of its economic growth to revenue from its oil and gas fields in the Timor Sea. ###
