Two hydro-electricity power plants Opens in Koh Kong

The groundbreaking ceremony of hydropower plant Strung Tatai in Koh Kong province officially opened in March 29 with providing more help for the local communities and low cost of electricity.

H.E. Suy Sem, minister of mines, energy and industries said that in 2014 we will have electricity for using in households of the local communities and nearby provinces and Phnom Penh. “This project will contribute to providing the electricity for consumers in Phnom Penh, and Preah Shinaouk through power network with proper and cheap price, and help economic development and growth of the country,” he said in opening ceremony in Koh Koh.

H.E. Dom Yuhean, deputy governor of Koh Kong Province said that the big construction of hydropower power plant will provide the huge benefits for the development of this province and promote tourism sector and also will provide job opportunities for local community living here. “The electricity will play a key for business demand in the area and improve living conditions of the people, he said, adding that Koh Kong already consumed four megawatts of electricity from neighbouring provinces of Thailand and is discussing to buy 11 megawatts more for implementing industrial and consumer demand in the provicne.

Mr.Lu Weichun, president of China National heavy Machinery Corporation (CNHMC) said that this hydropower will construct at Steung Tatai, which located about 300 km in southeast part of Phnom Penh and about 50 km form Koh Kong Provincial town. “It has three turbine machines and each could produce electricity with 82 Megawatt. The project will be completely finished 2013 and invested with 540 Million US dollars,” he said.

On April 1, Cambodia opened another hydropower plant in Koh Kong, namely Russei Chrom Krom hydropower plant with capacity of producing 338 megawatts. H.E. Suy Sem, minister of Industry Mine, and Energy said in symbolic opening ceremony in Phnom Penh that this power plant invested and developed by China Hudian Corpoartion under framework of B.O.T (Build, Operation and Transfer) with legal procedures of 35 years. “It will provide cheap cost for electricity for households and help accelerate the energy power in country and help instead of replacing electricity which produced from gasoline that is high cost for households,” he said.

The project invested with over 495 million US dollars and could produce power with 338 megawatts, he said, adding that the project will be competed in 2014. He added that he price of electricity that sells for Electricity Authority of Cambodia is 7.35 per cent US dollar per kilowatt.
The EAC will purchase about 1020.9 million Kilowatts for one year from this company, he said, adding that it will distribute the power to Phnom Penh, Pursat and Koh Kong provinces.
Additionally, deputy prime minister and minister of economic and finance told the ceremony that the government has strongly supported private sector to develop electricity and energy field and other physical infrastructures.

According to our master plan of the electricity, in 2020 all villages across the country will have electricity at households and in 2030 at least 70 per cent of the total population will access to electricity from the national power network, said H.E Keat Chhon. He also urged the developer to build the construction with technical standard and gurantee with high quality for benefits of social development, economic development of eth country with keeping major balance of environment.
Mr. Yun Gong Min, director general of the company said that this is new point of chain –Cambodia relation and cooperation. We will complete the construction as mentioning in contract and the construction will have high quality for operation in long term,” he noted. ###
